20 Life Lessons Your Mother Taught You

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, a time to reflect on our mothers and all that they have done for us. Don’t forget to recognize your mother this weekend! I’ve compiled a list of notable lessons we’ve all learned before—likely taught to you by your mother in an effort to make you a productive member of society.

  1. Eat your veggies: Take care of your body, eat good foods, exercise, this is the only body you get!
  2. Clean up after yourself: As you get older, you can see why it’s such a good idea to keep a clean home—it helps with your mental state as well as your productivity levels.
  3. Do unto others what you would have them do unto you: Ahh, the Golden Rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  4. Be proud of yourself: When you work hard and accomplish your goal, be proud of that. But if you fail, don’t give up one yourself—get up and try again.
  5. But don’t look for recognition: If you do things only to be recognized, you’re doing things for the wrong reasons.
  6. If you want it, earn it: Nobody is just going to hand you things in life. If you want something, make a plan, work hard, save up, and then you can get it.
  7. Save your money: Set aside some of what you earn for a rainy day. You won’t regret it.
  8. It’s all in a day’s work: You get places by hard work and dedication.
  9. Get your elbows off the table: Practice good manners and you’ll earn respect from those around you.
  10. Always wear clean underwear: Do this for so many reasons.
  11. Forgive others: No one benefits from holding a grudge. Let yourself move on.
  12. A warm hug cures all ills: Personal relationships make a big difference in your outlook on life.
  13. No boo-boo is too big to handle: Life hurts, but you’ll get through it. Keep on truckin’.
  14. Lies always bring more trouble than simply telling the truth: Be honest. If others trust you, you are a successful person.
  15. It is better to give than to receive: Serving others brings more happiness than indulging yourself.
  16. Idle hands are the devil’s workshop: Keep yourself busy and productive.
  17. It’s ok to get your hands dirty: Creating with your hands is good for the soul.
  18. That’s what family is for: Family should stand by each other and lift each other up.
  19. When life brings you lemons, make lemonade: Find the silver lining in every problem. Your positive attitude will get you through many hard times.
  20. When life brings you lemonade, be grateful and humble: Sometimes life is generous, but you shouldn’t expect that, you should be grateful for it.

So go thank your mother for what she has taught you, and if you’ve forgotten some of these lessons, now is a great time to implement them into your routine.
